5 out of 5 stars Big, big fan of this razor.   November 19, 2009

Background: My facial hair grows in quickly -- 5 o'clock shadow type guy, and grows a full beard in a couple weeks. I'm also pretty particular about what razors I use (and can use), sticking only to Gillette Mach 3 blades of one variety or another (tried the Schick Quattro, didn't like it). I've never had an electric razor, other than using a low-end model more than 15 years ago which never really did the job. I was sckeptical an electric razor could do the job for me.

Immediately after starting to use this product I was impressed. I get a very, very close shave with it -- comparable to a razor, and without all the effort and mess. Plus, I find this to be a big time saver for me. It takes me about 3 minutes to do the job, and it gets done in the shower which is even better in the mornings when I'm pressed for time (i.e. running late). I've used it for almost 3 weeks so far, haven't touched a razor balde since, and finding it fit into my routine more and more every day.

Big, big fan of this electric razor.

Pros:
* takes little time to charge -- about an hour or less.
* it lasts the whole week on one charge.
* it gives a very smooth shave and doesn't irritate sensitive parts of my face/neck as razor blades do.
* it is great to use in the shower
* I've been using it for almost 3 weeks so far and still haven't had to clean it (it has an indicator to you when to clean it)
* I expect cleaning it to be super easy
* the travel case is slim, and won't take up any more space in my luggage than the razor itaself does.
* pivot head / fixed head / sideburn edge
* heft and size. I have large hands, and this fits my mits well. Good solid weight too.

Cons:
* when recharging, the light is BRIGHT. I dno't leave it charging overnight b/c the light from teh bathroom is noticeable in teh bedroom. Wow.
* more on the above -- the light blinks too, which is doubly annoying
* doesn't do a great job on one part of my face, just under the jaw line. I frequently have to do this part over. Not sure if it's the razor or me. I'm going to blame the razor.
* costs a lot.
* replacement blades are going to hurt the pocket book when it comes time to get them.
* There isn't a charging station. Some people might like just having a cord. I would like to have a cord AND a charging station for the price of the razor.
* worried that if I drop it, it'll break.

On the whole, I'm very, very pleased with the product. I think it's one very impressive piece of machinery, and I would be thrilled to receive it as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars The best electric shaver I've used so far   January 21, 2010

I've used a lot of electric shavers over the years, including some of the higher end Remington, Braun and Panasonic units. I mostly used them to avoid getting nicks on my chin. However none of them have done a good enough job on my neck, so I usually used a manual razor on the neck and sides and the electric shave in the goatee area. I was both apprehensive and hopeful about moving up from my Panasonic ES8228S Men's Linear Vortex Nano Arc Foil Shaving System, Silver because compared to it, this thing is a jumbo jet. It has a much bigger shaving area, and has a higher rpm motor which hums confidently when you turn it on. It took about two weeks for me to get my face to adapt for a similar shave quality and after about a month I've found that it gives me a much better shave than any of my previous shavers. It's razor close on most of my face and it has even gotten the cross grained hairs on my neck into presentable fashion (not as close as a blade, but respectable). It is much larger than my last shaver (I've uploaded some comparison photos), so it did take some getting used to, especially on the upper lip. Overall I'm very happy with it, and even though it doesn't come with a cleaning station like my last Panasonic razor, I don't really miss it since the recommended liquid soap and water method works very well, it's easy and a lot quicker and quieter than the base station.

PROS
- Works great wet or dry
- Gets cross grained hair down to respectable levels
- Easy cleanup
- Long Battery Life (10-14 days)
- Power lock switch so it won't accidentally turn on during travel (I had this happen once on an old shaver)
- Easy to read LCD with wash reminders, time used, and percentage of battery left (10% increments)
- Multi-directional pivoting head
- Fast and strong motor reduces the number of passes
- Large surface with 4 blades (but only two inside driving 2 more in the foil)

CONS
- Small soft sided travel bag can't fit charger (although you won't need it for most trips)
- Large shaving area takes some getting used to on smaller areas like the upper lip
- Without the base you don't have a "home" for the unit and you do have to remember to charge it.
- Maybe price is a bit steep compared to others, but if you get it on sale it's a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Close Shave!   October 22, 2009

I have to take over the reigns for my wife on this review. I have been shaving since the age of fourteen and using an electric razor since I was twenty. I am in my early thirties and have gone through my fair share of different electric shavers. But I have always been drawn to Panasonic as of late. Panasonic's ES8109S is excellent and has been my staple for a few years, along with Anthony Logistics shaving supplies and a bottle of aloe vera gel (a little bit on a clean shaven face helps to fight itching and dry skin). So when I had to change razors for this review, I was a little weary.

First thing, the ES-LA63-S is BIG. It's not bulky or heavy but it does cover more shaving area than the ES8109S. At first, I was worried about accuracy and I did miss a few areas. I felt as if it didn't have the precision a smaller head gives. I was wrong. Once I slowed down, (almost to a snails pace) the larger head cut down my shaving time quite a bit. And it was an extremely smooth shave without any pulling on my skin or the hair. I was/am extremely impressed by the experience.

I can't comment on using this as a dry razor. I always use my electric razor straight out of the shower on wet skin. It is when it is the best time to shave; the hair is softened and the pores are more receptive.

My only gripe is that you just get a razor, adapter and carry case. The ES8109S is a lesser model, but not by much, but came with a great cleaning station. This, you have to run underwater, holding down the power button brings the razors to a faster vibration that does clean the heads. But as it stands now, I have the razor held upside down in a glass to make sure water residue doesn't rust any parts.

With Halloween coming up, I decided to wait on posting a review. I needed a bit of scruff to pull off a costume and realized that would be a good test of the razor afterwards -- going three days without shaving is usually the bane of an electric razor.

It worked great. In fact, it worked a lot better than any previous electric razor I've used, particularly after a couple days of growth. A casual inspection of the cutting surface doesn't really show me why. It looks similar to my Braun, but I think the flat cutting surface on this razor (the thing in between the foils) simply works better than any other razor I've had for cutting back the long hairs so that the foils can finish them off.

This razor does suffer from the same problem I've had from some previous foil razors, though -- the foils warm up during shaving and it feels irritating to the skin. However, I'm not docking it any points for this because it's a wet/dry razor. Run a little cold water on it and it's back to shaving with a nice cool touch.

The wet/dry also makes it easy to clean. I liked my Braun with the cleaning station (where you just dock your razor and it cleans itself) but that ended up requiring basically a subscription to use my razor as I always needed refills of the cleaning solution. With this thing you just use a bit of liquid soap, run it til it foams up and rinse it off. It only takes a few seconds to clean -- no messing around with a brush like with some of my older razors.

As for the closeness of the shave, in my opinion the only thing that shaves as close as a razor is a razor, but shaving with a razor is always more time consuming. I will suggest that this electric razor shaves closer than my Norelco Advantage or Braun 8585 did. Of those three, I do like them all for various reasons but I'm going to stick with this one moving forward. It's as good as the Braun for daily shaving, better than the Braun for cleaning up after a "I don't feel like shaving" weekend and free and easy to clean.

5 stars.

(edit: Actually I do agree with other reviewers about the price. The price as of 11/5/09 is over twice that of my old Braun 8585. I do like this razor better but I wouldn't say it's twice as good. I suspect the price difference comes from being a wet/dry razor, though. Waterproof watches tend to be more expensive than watches that aren't waterproof, all else equal.)

5 out of 5 stars Best electric razor ever   November 19, 2009

Razors are somewhat personal. What works for one person isn't necessarily right for another person.

I don't have one of those tough beards that needs a chainsaw to shave. I have the opposite problem that my whiskers don't stand up enough to get into the cutting area of most electric razors without repeated passes.

I have tried many electric razors by Braun, Norelco, etc. and finally found a Panasonic electric that was very effective. I liked that one a lot and when it finally died after years of service I got a Panasonic ES8249K Arc IV Nano Vortex Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaving System which was the replacement for the earlier model and really liked it.

Then this razor came out.

I like it even better than the previous Panasonic I had. It is better at getting the corners, the edges and the flats than the previous razor which I was very happy with. I can shave in about 30% less time with this razor.

I use it dry as the wet just makes by whiskers even less likely to be in the right place on the razor.
