Remington MS-280 June 25, 2009 BB (WA) I started with the Remington DA-307 and was impressed initially. Took it back just before 30 day trial ended. It was a good razor and cut close. The price was unbeatable at $25. It just did a very poor job under the chin and on the neck. I was having to use a blade to "touch up" under the chin and on neck. Got time consuming.
Decided to try the MS-280 which is just a step up in cost. It is a huge improvement over the DA-307. Less irritation, cuts as close or better, and does better under the chin and on neck. The foils seem to hug my face and the contours better. Also feels better in my hand. The DA-307 never felt right in my hand.
It has two seperate cutters that work independent of each other while the DA-307 has one double cutter working in tandem. I think it does a better job as a result. The MS-280 got everything the first time and I did not have to make as many passes.
It is loud! Most people seem to complain about the noise of Remington's. I could care less. I want something that will shave my face well. It does its job. The only other negative is having to charge the thing for 24 hours before first use.
Good for the Price March 1, 2010 JW (texas) I have used the similar Remington type of shavers most of my life (I don't know what a quiet shaver sounds like) and find the MS-280 to be a very reliable shaver for the price.I do have to remind myself to replace the foils and blades about every 6 months. I shave most of my face everyday and my head every other day so this razor get's a workout. Use a light pressure and it cuts like a hot knife through butter. I like the trimmer because it is at 90 deg. to the shaver and that is just more comfortable for me to use. The charge time is overnight and it tends to hold a charger for 4-5 face shaves and two head shaves.
Not a bad Shaver for the money April 28, 2008 R. S. Reis (USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The two reviewers that gave this shaver a 1-star rating may have been a bit too harsh. This shaver is an extremely good buy for the money. After using an expensive Norelco shaver for the past 7 or so years, it finally died on me a few weeks ago and I figured I'd try a cheap replacement for a change.
I decided on the Remington MS280 from a local retailer and took it home to test it out for a few weeks. The shaver comes with a pretty liberal return policy so I figured I had nothing to lose. To make a long story short, here are the pros and cons for this little guy:
Pros:
1. Shaves like a dream. I'm serious. This shaver can do a decent job in about 1-2 minutes and it can leave my face silky smooth in about 5 minutes with a few extra passes. To say I was impressed with the shave quality is an understatement.
2. It's cheap. I mean, it's so cheap you might think twice about buying replacements blades and screens since they cost almost as much as the shaver itself. Now, the replacement blades/screens for more expensive shavers are just about the same price, the only difference is that when you compare those to buying a new $200 shaver, the choice is pretty clear.
3. The charge holds for a few days at least for me. I haven't really kept track of it but I can say with certainty that I've used it for at least 4 days without recharging it.
With that in mind, here are the...
Cons:
1. It's loud! Not "man, this is kind loud!" loud... It's more like "who disguised a weedwacker as a shaver?" loud. I honestly must say it startled me at first. I was seriously afraid to touch that moped-engine-out-of-hell to my face.
2. It's not the most stylish thing in the market. Seriously though, what did you expect for about $30.00? It doesn't look like it's about to break at any moment, but it doesn't make you stare in the mirror while holding it either. I'd equate it to that really ugly secretary that can do the job of 15 hot ones. You don't want to look at it, but you probably will miss it if it's gone.
3. [No longer applicable - see update] This thing takes a good while to charge. The instructions say to charge it for 24 hours before using it for the first time, but it also says the charging light goes off when it's fully charged, so I let it charge until the light turned off... TWO DAYS LATER! (can you say "patience"? I can.) I figured it was just the first charge, but then I tried charging it after using it twice and it took a bit over 24 hours to turn off the light during a recharge.
All in all, would I recommend it to someone? Probably.
If you buy it knowing its quirks, you won't be disappointed. It's a very good buy for the price. Now don't go comparing it to those $140.00 shavers, it's just not fair. Then again, considering the quality of the shave (the most important part of a shaver, I might add), you might end up comparing it anyway and coming out glad that you saved $110.00.
Just make sure anyone in your household is either awake or is a deep sleeper or you will be shaving outside (OK, I'm exaggerating, but you will definitely have to close the bathroom door).
I haven't really used the trimmer, although I should mention that their 3 positions include the "closed" position, so really it only has two positions: half-way up and fully up. Don't you just love marketing?
Oh, one more thing: the shaver is a bit cumbersome to clean but the included brush helps. It also tends to leave a fine dust on the outside of the shaving head near the blade, nothing a quick blow won't take care though.
Bottom line: it's way too cheap not to take a chance on what might be close to the best shave you can get under 50 bucks. If it was a tad quieter, I'd give it 5 stars in a heartbeat.
UPDATE (07/31/2008): After using it for a while now and going through a few recharge cycles, I'm forced to retract my "Con #3". The shaver is now running for over a week on a single charge (shaving once a day) and it recharges fully overnight. Great charge/fast recharge.
I've also used the trimmer a few times now and it works flawlessly. Straight cuts and no hair tugging. IT just feels right when you try to use it and the position of the trimmer helps a lot in aiming and aligning it to make a straight sideburn trim, for example.
I would definitely give it 5 stars now.
Not bad for the price December 4, 2007 TreborD (SF, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this from Target as an emergency replacement for my expensive Panasonic wet/dry (forgotten at home when I went on vacation). Have used this only as a wet shaver, with shaving cream, though it's not advertised as such - the literature only mentions cleaning it under a stream of water. Very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the shave - actually gets my neck closer than my cherished Panasonic does. On the other hand, it's loud enough to wake the dead...and, though I haven't suffered a catastrophic screen failure like 'malinate', I have noticed a gradual decrease in shave quality over the 3 months I've been using it. Also the battery's not the strongest in the world - it really needs to be recharged every night - but it'll run for closer to 30 minutes than 30 seconds when fully charged. (TK must've gotten one with a bad battery.) All in all, a pretty good lower-end shaver - it's been a fine back-up for me.
Nice razor for the price. January 2, 2009 Jason Tallon (Rapid City, SD) When the head broke on my previous (much more expensive) razor, and replacement parts weren't available for sale, I found myself in the market for a new one. I picked up the MS280, as I've had good luck with Remingtons, and I wanted to be a little more frugal this time.
What I got was a very good razor, if you factor the price in to the equation.
It shaves very well, better in fact than my previous one ever did. Closer, with less work, and less need to go back for "stragglers". It gives a much closer shave than anything I've owned before.
That earns it an instant 3 stars, just for working well, because so many others don't. The fact that it does it at a good price gets it a fourth star.
What it lacks are the little details that would give it the fifth. The buttons are a little mushy and awkward. The charge light is recessed, and can be tricky to see unless the angle is right. It doesn't have the tiny razor screen that works really well under the nose. Cleaning isn't as easy as some others. All minor things, really.
No regrets. It's a nice razor in it's own right. It's very nice given the price. I'd certainly buy one again.
