Best price vs performance April 14, 2007 PhotoGraphics (Arizona) 95 out of 97 found this review helpful
I waited a couple of weeks to write this review so I could let my face get used to a new razor.
Background: I have used Norelco rotary shavers since I began to shave as a teen. My skin has always been sensitive and any time I tried a non-rotary shaver my face would become red and irritated. I also felt I was getting the closest electric shave possible with a rotary shaver. Sometimes I will go several days without shaving and as much as I liked rotaries, they do not do well on a heavy beard growth.
The switch: Whenever the blades needed replacing on my rotary shavers I would buy a whole new razor. The price of replacement blades is almost as much as the shaver itself. My most recent Norelco served me well but in recent months shaving became a dreaded experience. Norelco uses a motor rather than a vibrator like most other shavers and it can tend to slow down when the blades are dull and the beard is thick.
The decision: Although I have never had luck with non-rotary shavers I tried a friend's Braun once and was surprised how much closer it shaved and how my face felt good afterward. His was the cheap $29 model and I would have been happy with it, but I liked the style of the Model 5775. Anything more expensive seemed to be just more gimmicks. I simply cannot see what would justify over $100 for an electric razor.
The review: This is the closest shaving razor I have ever owned and it actually makes shaving a pleasure. The wider head and the way the various slots are arranged lets me shave by gliding the razor over my face. No pressure needed.
The bad: It feels big and heavy (which can be taken as a positive ... is feels remarkably well built). The swivel head is pure gimmick. It doesn't swivel during normal shaving and seems to be useless. Braun could have made the shaver smaller, lighter and with fewer parts prone to break if they left that "feature" off.
Highly recommended - excellent value.
Great Shaver at a Great Price! July 6, 2007 Z. A. Pennell (PDX, OR United States) 47 out of 47 found this review helpful
I have been a loyal user of Norelco's shavers ever since my dad bought me my first one when I was just starting to shave. A decade later I've gone through three of Norelco's shavers and was, until the past few years, very happy with them. 3 shavers over 10 years works out to an average of over 3 years per shaver (I'm good with math, I know) which wouldn't be too bad, but it hasn't gone that way. My first shaver lasted me 6 years, the second only about 2.5 years, and the most recent (and final!) Norelco shaver lasted only about a year and a half and the past 6 months have been shaving misery. Irritation and razor bumps galore, especially around my neck and under my jaw. It was pretty embarrassing having hardcore razor bumps on my neck and the irritation got to be so bad that for the past year, I've just been using a beard trimmer to trim the scruff down to a "1" in length...I think I've only been clean shaven 5, maybe 6 times in the past 12 months!
I was confused because my first Norelco shaver had always worked so well but the last two were pretty unsatisfactory. I've heard elsewhere that this most likely had something to do with Phillips Electronics taking over Norelco and the quality control is not what it used to be. Bottom line: it was time for a change.
I'd always dismissed Braun's shavers because they seemed inferior to Norelco's 3 shaver heads and Norelco's famous "lift-and-cut" system. But, being fed up with Norelco's crap quality control, I gave the Braun 5775 a try (got it on sale at Target for $[...]) and I've been extremely happy with it for over a month now. I've gotten, literally, no razor burn/bumps on my neck. None. That alone made me extremely happy, but the shaver is high quality all around so I've been very pleased. It shaves great...not as close as a Norelco (probably has something to do with the "lift-and-cut" technology that Norelcos have)...but I will glady trade an extra minute or so of shave time for no razor bumps. Clean-up is easy as pie under the faucet (but so was the Norelco, to be fair). Feels great in my hand. Battery lasts a looooong time (so far at least).
It's not perfect however: The pop-up trimmer is pretty lame (fortunately, I still have my beard trimmer), long neck hairs (3+ days of growth) take several passes to get them all (I've started using the beard trimmer to knock down the long ones to a shaveable length first and that's worked fine), and the "empty shaver head" light comes on all the time, even after I've just cleaned the shaver. The noise level is pretty high compared to the Norelcos but nothing unacceptable.
Long story short: I'm very happy with this shaver. The "pro's" far outweigh the "con's" and I'm a Braun guy from here on out. Finally, and I don't know how much help this would be to your decision making, but I would rate my "beard toughness" as being about a 7 on a scale of 1 (being teenager peach fuzz) to 10 (being an Alaskan mountain man beard). Some of my beard grows sideways as well and I just use the Braun shaver in the appropriate direction there and it takes care of the problem. My only regret is that I didn't pony up the cash for the Braun 360 razor. Maybe next time (if there is one!). Good luck!
Good shaver and a great price October 7, 2005 L. Lemar (Laurel, MD USA) 27 out of 29 found this review helpful
The shaver works very well, feels comfortable in the hand and does clean beautifully when held under water. Excellent purchase if you want an economical yet sturdy shaver.
Just as good as Braun 8585 and 8985 July 26, 2007 A. Juliano 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Recently my clean and charge base broke for my 8585 so I decided to go out and buy a new razor instead of pay $60 for a new cleaning base. After two years of using the 8585 I didnt want to try anything else so I bit the bullet and bought the 8985. After one month this cleaning base broke.
Tired of buying these expensive razors with gimicky cleaning bases I found a 5775 on clearance for $50. I did not expect it to work as good as the 8585 or 8985 but as I used it I realized the shave is just as close and at half the price.
I would recommend this razor for anyone as it shaves just as good as the expensive models and does not contain the gimmicky cleaning base which also cost roughly $10 every two months(for two cartridges).
Excelent shaver October 22, 2006 Gayle R. Donham 30 out of 35 found this review helpful
One of the best shavers Braun has made in a long time and has many options for use. You can use it just like it is,brush it out and then rinse with hot water. Another option is you can purchase a clean and charge stand. Also you can purchase a 12 renewal pack which comes with a cutter block and foil, and 12 cartridges for your clean and charge stand. Also they make two cases for the 5775,one is a square soft case and they also make a hard case. You can buy a protective cap for the foil, and clean out brushes.I have been using Braun shavers for over 50 years.I presently own a 5775 model Braun and I highly recommend it to anyone.
